June 2024 update: FYI, the trail is still there, but according to a reader, the swing is no longer at the end. The views still are though!

Looking for an afternoon of adventure with breathtaking views of the San Gabriel Valley and beyond? The Nike Hill Trail is a hidden gem that rewards hikers with a stunning panorama of Los Angeles, the Hollywood Sign, and even downtown on a clear day.

How to Get to Nike Hill Trail

The Nike Hill Trail is located behind the Rio Hondo Police Academy in South El Monte, about 30 minutes east of downtown Los Angeles.

Directions & Parking

Set your GPS to Rio Hondo Police Academy. Before you reach the academy, at the intersection of North Drive and Workman Mill Road, you’ll find a parking area for hikers.

  • ⚠️ There’s another parking lot further up North Drive near the Academy, but it has signs restricting access. Some hikers park there on weekends at their own risk.

After parking, you’ll need to walk through the Academy grounds to reach the trailhead. It may feel unusual, but you’re on the right path! Soon enough you’ll see a sign for Nick Hill… Follow the path until you see a yellow gate that tells you to stay out… Ignore it and keep on going… 🙂

What to Expect on the Hike

The Nike Hill Trail is more about the destination than the journey. The trail follows an asphalt road up the hill, making it a steady but challenging incline.

Hiking Details

  • Distance: ~2 miles (round trip)
  • Time: 45 minutes – 1 hour each way
  • Difficulty: Moderate (steep incline)

🌟 Pro Tip: The trail includes several dirt hiking paths that break off from the main road. Take these for a more traditional hiking experience.
