For the next four days, you have the unique opportunity to watch “MALPASO,” a powerful film that tells a story about twin siblings living at the Dominican Republic/Haiti border. ‘MALPASO’ is free to enjoy thanks to the Latin American Cinemateca of Los Angeles (LACLA) as part of their Cine Nepantla program.

Titled after an actual small town located at the dividing line between Dominican Republic and Haiti, the film depicts Candido, who is albino, and Braulio, his twin brother – teenagers who were “orphaned” early in life and therefore forced to provide and look out for one another in unfortunate conditions.

It’s a deeply personal project by Dominican director Hector M. Valdez, who uses his craft to give a voice to the youth in the most marginalized area of his homeland. While this is a sobering subject, the movie is beautifully shot in black and white, with hints of magical realism and sprinkles of music that make for an enjoyable hour-and-twenty minutes. The dialogue is in Spanish with English subtitles.
