Update: Cecil Blue is back as of July 2025, after a 6-month rest. I’m thrilled!

If you’ve been on the lookout for a dynamic local band in Mobile, here’s a recommendation: Cecil Blue. Comprising four talented musicians who effortlessly blend rock and country, this band is a testament to charisma, connection, and boundless energy.

.

Meet the band members:

1. Vermon Byrd II: “Verm” is the charismatic frontman and co-founder of Cecil Blue. Verm’s rosy cheeks and baseball cap might give you a down-to-earth impression, but his voice, complete with a Southern twang, is a perfect match for the country tunes he belts out. As he paces around the bar, making connections with the audience, you can’t help but smile when he interacts with fans, fist-bumping the men and hugging the ladies who sing along into his microphone.

.

2. Brett Long: A co-founder of the band, he is the rhythmic heartbeat behind Cecil Blue. By day, he’s a drafting and design instructor, but by night, he’s the driving force behind the band’s percussion. When asked about his motivation, Brett says, “I love everything I do. Teaching, designing, performing, and creating. That’s my motivation.”

.

3. Mark Merriam: The guitarist with a rock and roll soul. Mark is all about the visual and musical spectacle, which reflects in his colorful outfits. He started with the drums but fell in love with the guitar by his 16th birthday. Mark’s versatile talents even extend to crooning a Sinatra tune on special occasions. Originally from Houston, he now calls Mobile his home and has traveled (along with his friend, Troy) as far as Hong Kong to share his musical gifts.

.

4. Troy Cooper: The bassist of the group, he’s also the one to take on popular Jelly Roll covers like “Save Me” and “Need a Favor.” His ability to effortlessly juggle both his instrument and a cigarette comes from his dedication to the bass, which he picked up at 17 and hasn’t let go since. Music runs deep in Troy’s family, with his father being a musician and his son following in his footsteps as a drummer.

.

Cecil Blue describes itself as a “bar band,” and even if a note or a lyric is dropped here and then, one thing they’ll never drop is the fun. Their versatility, boundless energy, and dedication to creating a party atmosphere make them a must-see act in Mobile. Whether you’re a fan of rock, country, or simply looking for a good time, Cecil Blue is the band to check out.

These photos were taken last month at The Blues Tavern. Mark your calendar for October 28th when the band will return to the venue for its Halloween party. To stay updated on Cecil Blue’s various performances, be sure to follow them on their Facebook page.
