Updated 7/21/25 – Adding La Delicia, recently opened in downtown Mobile. Yummy!
When I first arrived in Mobile, AL, after leaving the bustling streets of Los Angeles, I couldn’t help but worry about finding authentic Mexican food. The vibrant culinary scene in L.A. had spoiled me with its array of delicious and genuine Mexican cuisine, and I wondered what I’d find in my new town.
Let me tell you, I’ve discovered a few hidden gems in Mobile that have satisfied my cravings for Mexican flavors. Although there has been one tiny hitch – it’s been very hard to find one open for Mexican breakfast, which for years had been a staple in my weekend routine. However, I’m stoked to tell you that La Delicia just fixed that problem, opening at 8 am and 9 am (depending on the day) and serving multiple breakfast dishes that I’ve been missing for almost three years!
1. La Delicia Mexican Brunch and Cantina

Open early in the morning for breakfast (8 am or 9 am, depending on the day), La Delicia serves authentic Mexican breakfast dishes like huevos rancheros, huevos divorciados (pictured), and café de la olla. The salsa music in the background will lift your spirits – and if you’re in the mood, the cantina bar offers an assortment of cocktails to elevate them even more!
📍 Location: 615 Dauphin St, Mobile, AL

2. El Agave Mexican Restaurant

This was the first Mexican restaurant in Mobile I tried because it happens to be located in my neighborhood. El Agave welcomed us with its colorful decor and charming ambiance, featuring beautifully carved tables and chairs. While their chicken soup surprised me with its avocado and pico de gallo topping, the rest of the menu delivered as expected, and their molcajete is quite good! This restaurant is popular among University of South Alabama students and a favorite spot for its margaritas.
📍 Location: 5556 Old Shell Rd, Mobile, AL 36608

3. Rio Mexican Grill

With its festive atmosphere and authentic flavors, Rio Mexican Grill stole my heart with its mouthwatering carnitas en salsa verde. Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor seating, this place has it all, along with a full bar to enjoy your favorite drinks.
📍 Location: 6401 Airport Blvd, Mobile, AL 36608
🌐 Website: Rio Mexican Grill
4. Hacienda San Miguel: House of Tequila

If you’re looking for a place that reminds you of an El Torito in California, this is your spot. While I have a preference for its sister restaurant in Theodore, AL, the one on Schillinger doesn’t disappoint. Don’t miss their chicharrones con guacamole appetizer—so delicious that I order it every time! I only wish their pozole came with cabbage. This restaurant is a popular choice for birthdays and family gatherings.
📍 Location: 880 Schillinger Rd S, Mobile, AL 36695
🌐 Website: Hacienda San Miguel
5. La Cocina Mexican Restaurant

With two locations in Mobile, the original La Cocina (on Airport Blvd) captures the essence of small Mexican joints reminiscent of those in L.A.. It feels authentic and casual, serves huevos rancheros starting at 11 am and a beef soup that includes delicious oxtail chunks!
📍 Locations:
- 4663 Airport Blvd, Mobile, AL 36608
- 830 West Interstate 65 Service Rd S, Mobile, AL 36609

6. Villa del Rey Cocina Mexicana
Best about this restaurant is its very large menu. You can visit Villa del Rey confident that you’ll find what you want. My preferred location is the one on Schillinger, but there’s a second one in what is known as Legacy Village.
📍📍 Locations:
9 Du Rhu Dr, Mobile, AL 36608
2536 Schillinger Rd S, Mobile, AL 36695
Each of these Mexican restaurants in Mobile, AL, holds a special place in my heart for different reasons. But I’m always on the lookout for new spots to explore.
